Dishwashers are not really one product category anymore. The unit that came standard in your 1995 Hillsboro tract home and the Bosch 800 series your neighbor installed during their kitchen remodel last year share a name and not much else. They draw water differently, dry differently, fail differently, and cost wildly different amounts to service. Anyone who tells you “a dishwasher is a dishwasher” has not opened one in five years.

This guide is organized by the brand families we actually service across Hillsboro — because honest dishwasher repair advice has to start with what is in front of you. A $1,500 service call on a $400 mainstream dishwasher is bad math. The same call on a $2,400 Miele G7000 is barely a consideration. Knowing where your unit sits in the market tells you what to budget, what to expect, and when to walk away.

Brand and tier matter more for dishwashers than for almost any other appliance. The repair conversation is fundamentally different on a Bosch than on a Whirlpool.

Bosch and Miele — the European premium tier

If you bought your kitchen during a Hillsboro remodel in the last few years, especially in Orenco Station, AmberGlen, or any of the South Hillsboro custom builds, there is a good chance you have a Bosch or Miele dishwasher. These are the quietest units on the market, the most reliable over a 10-year horizon, and the most expensive to service when something does fail.

Bosch 300, 500, 800, and Benchmark. The repair pattern we see most: water inlet valve failures around year 6-8 (about $220 to $320 in Hillsboro), circulation pump failures around year 8-10 ($340 to $520), and the occasional control board failure on units that experienced a power surge (the South Hillsboro grid is generally clean but PGE outages still happen). The good news with Bosch: parts are widely available, service procedures are well documented, and a tech who knows the brand can do most repairs in a single visit.

Miele G5000 and G7000. Different beast. Miele units use proprietary diagnostic procedures and some specialized tools. Parts come from the regional distributor and can take 3 to 7 business days. The mechanical reliability is exceptional — most Miele units we see at our shop are 12 to 15 years old. When they do fail, the most common items are the door spring assembly (cheap part, fiddly install — $260 to $380 installed in Hillsboro) and the AutoDos detergent system on the 7000 series (a $400 to $640 repair we hate quoting because the system itself is complicated).

Worth knowing for both: European units have stainless tubs that radiate heat far better than plastic. They also use a fundamentally different drying approach (condensation drying via the cool tub wall, no heating element). This means they take longer per cycle but use less energy. Owners who complain that “dishes come out wet” usually need to enable the rinse aid dispenser and switch to crystal-clear rinse aid. Free fix.

KitchenAid and Thermador — the American premium tier

KitchenAid and Thermador (both owned by Whirlpool, FWIW) target a similar price point and similar buyer to Bosch, but with American-market features — large interior capacity, taller tubs, the classic heated-dry option for owners who want drier dishes faster. We see these primarily in the early-2000s through mid-2010s Hillsboro builds.

  • Diverter motor failures on third-rack-equipped KitchenAid units. The motor that switches water flow between the upper, middle, and lower spray arms. About a $280 to $420 repair.
  • Drain pump issues are common on KitchenAid units around year 7-9. $200 to $300 installed.
  • Touch panel failures — Thermador hidden-control units have a known weak point where the touch panel under the door edge accumulates moisture from leaky gaskets, eventually shorting out. $440 to $680 repair. We sometimes see this within the 1-year warranty, in which case we coordinate with the brand directly.

Whirlpool, GE, and Maytag — the mainstream tier

This is the most common tier across Hillsboro, especially in the 1990s-2010s tract-home stock. Whirlpool, Whirlpool-built KitchenAid (the cheaper lines), GE, GE Profile, Maytag, and Frigidaire dishwashers from this period. These are workhorses — they are not particularly quiet, not particularly efficient, and they have moving parts (chopper blades, fully-mechanical timers on the older ones, basic spray-arm setups) that wear out predictably.

The most common Hillsboro service calls on this tier:

  • Door latch / interlock switch. Easy fix. $150 to $240 installed.
  • Water inlet valve. Predictable failure around year 7-9 on hard-water Hillsboro municipal lines. $160 to $260.
  • Float switch sticking. Mineral buildup on the float in the tub keeps it in the “up” position, fridge thinks tub is full. 10-minute clean.
  • Drain pump. Two-thirds of “won’t drain” calls on this tier end here. $200 to $300.
  • Tub crack. Plastic tubs can crack at the bottom corners over 10+ years. This is the moment we usually recommend replacement — repair approaches the price of a new mid-range unit.

Honest economics on mainstream units: if your dishwasher is 10+ years old and the repair quote is over $400, replacement is almost always the better path. A new mainstream Whirlpool or Maytag retails $500 to $800 installed.

💡 Bring your model number

Every dishwasher service call we run is faster, cheaper, and more likely to be a one-visit fix if you can tell us the model and serial number when you book. It is on a sticker either inside the door frame on the right side, or on the side wall of the tub. Snap a photo before you call — it speeds up parts staging considerably.

Samsung and LG — the smart-feature tier

Samsung Family Hub-linked dishwashers and LG ThinQ units have shown up in Hillsboro homes at higher rates than most metros, again because of the tech-corridor effect. The headline features are Wi-Fi notifications, cycle scheduling via app, and (on some Samsung models) the AutoRelease door that pops open after the wash cycle to assist drying.

The repair conversation on these:

  • App and Wi-Fi connectivity loss. The hardware works fine; the network features stop. Usually a router or firmware issue. Sometimes a failed Wi-Fi module ($180 to $340 to replace).
  • AutoRelease door servo failures on Samsung units that are now 4-6 years old. The motor that pops the door open at end of cycle gives up. $260 to $420 repair.
  • LE error codes on LG units — usually a circulation motor issue or a stuck Hall sensor. Tech diagnosis.

Smart dishwashers are not less reliable than non-smart ones — but they do introduce a category of “is this a repair or is this a tech-support problem?” that can be frustrating. We are happy to triage over the phone before we book a service call; sometimes 10 minutes of guided troubleshooting saves the dispatch.

Drawer dishwashers — Fisher & Paykel and KitchenAid

A small but growing segment in Hillsboro custom kitchens. Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer units (single or double) are essentially independent dishwasher drawers that pull out like cabinet drawers. The advantages: easy loading, the ability to run a small wash, and a slick look in modern kitchens.

The repair reality: drawer dishwashers fail almost exclusively at the drawer slide bearings (the runners that let the drawer extend) and the water seal at the drawer edge. Both are specialized repairs and parts come from the Fisher & Paykel distributor with a 3 to 5 business day lead time. Service cost is meaningfully higher than freestanding units — expect $320 to $620 per repair. If you are considering installing one, build a parts-and-service relationship with us before you need it.

“The brand of dishwasher in your kitchen decides everything about the repair: the diagnostic procedure, the part availability, the labor time, and whether replacement is the smarter answer. We always quote based on what is in front of us, not a generic price book.”

The kitchen-remodel install conversation

Hillsboro has been one of the hottest kitchen-remodel markets in the metro for the last five years. Anecdotally, about a third of our dishwasher service calls have a recent remodel in the background somewhere. A few patterns worth flagging:

Built-in dishwasher install in a remodeled Hillsboro kitchen
Built-in dishwasher installation in a remodeled Hillsboro kitchen — common dispatch reason for “first-cycle” problems.
  • The garbage disposal knockout. When a new disposal is installed and the inside knockout plug is not removed, your dishwasher cannot drain. Number-one cause of post-remodel “won’t drain” calls in Hillsboro.
  • The drain hose high loop. Code requires the drain hose to rise above the sink water level before going to the disposal or air gap. Many contractor installs skip this. Result: slow drain, smell, and back-siphoning of dirty sink water into the dishwasher.
  • The water supply valve. A surprising number of new installs have the supply valve closed or only partially open. The dishwasher fills extremely slowly and throws cryptic codes. Free fix if we can identify it.
  • Electrical not on its own circuit. Newer Hillsboro code requires dishwashers on dedicated 15-amp circuits, but older homes (and some quick remodels) share with the disposal or microwave. Cause of intermittent breaker trips.

If your remodel was less than 90 days ago and you are having issues, the contractor warranty should still apply. We are happy to coordinate with the original installer if that is helpful, or we can do the diagnostic and provide documentation for a warranty claim.

Repair vs. replace — the decision framework for each tier

  • Mainstream (under $700 new): If the unit is 10+ years old and the repair is over $400, replace. Otherwise repair. New mainstream units are well-engineered for the price and the warranty resets.
  • American premium (KitchenAid/Thermador, $1,000–$2,000 new): Repair almost always wins through year 10. After year 12, get both quotes — repair vs replacement with current efficiency.
  • European premium (Bosch/Miele, $1,200–$2,800 new): Repair through year 15 makes financial sense unless the failure is the wash pump or the control board on the high-end Miele models. These units typically reach end of life at year 18-20.
  • Smart units (Samsung/LG): If a smart feature has failed but the unit cools and washes, decide based on how much you use the smart feature. App connectivity by itself is often not worth the repair price.
  • Drawer units (Fisher & Paykel): Always repair — replacement requires re-doing cabinet integration. The drawer mechanism issues are addressable.

Frequently asked questions — Hillsboro dishwasher repair

Do you service Bosch and Miele dishwashers in Hillsboro?

Yes. We are factory-trained on both. Bosch parts are widely available and most repairs are one-visit. Miele can require 3 to 7 business days for some parts to ship from the regional distributor — we will tell you upfront if your specific repair will require an order.

My new dishwasher will not drain — could it be the installation?

Very often yes. New installs that follow a kitchen remodel have a high rate of unremoved garbage disposal knockout plugs, missing drain-hose high loops, and supply valves left closed. We always check installation first on units less than 6 months old before assuming a hardware fault.

How much does dishwasher repair cost in Hillsboro?

Mainstream units land $150 to $400 for most repairs. Premium and European units run $220 to $640 depending on part. Drawer units are typically $320 to $620. The $100 diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair. We always quote the total before we start.

Is it worth repairing an older mainstream dishwasher?

If the unit is 10+ years old and the repair quote is over $400, replacement usually wins on total cost of ownership. A new mainstream unit installed in Hillsboro runs $500 to $800. We will always quote both honestly so you can decide.

Why do my dishes come out wet on a Bosch or Miele?

European dishwashers use condensation drying instead of a heating element. They need rinse aid loaded in the dispenser to break the surface tension of the water film on dishes. Refill the rinse aid, switch to crystal-clear rinse aid if you are using a tinted brand, and the wet-dish issue resolves on its own. No repair needed.

My smart dishwasher app stopped working. Repair or DIY?

Try in order: restart the router, check the dishwasher firmware (most update on a schedule but you can force-check from the panel), re-pair the unit to your account. About 60% of “app not working” calls resolve with these steps. The other 40% involve a failing Wi-Fi module or display board — that is a repair.

How fast can you respond in Hillsboro?

Most service calls booked before noon get same-day dispatch. Afternoon bookings typically run next-day. Premium-brand units that require ordered parts may take an additional 3 to 7 business days for the actual repair after the diagnostic visit.
